Principal Dunn Update - August 27, 2023
Posted on 08/27/2023

Greetings, CCE Families!

What a fabulous week we had with your children! The staff and I appreciate all the parents and guardians who attended K-5th grades Back to School Nights (BTSN) this past week. Sixth grade Back to School Night takes place this Tuesday, August 29, 5-6:00 p.m. in the MPR. If you were unable to attend your student’s BTSN last week, please contact your child’s teacher who will provide you with the information that was presented. Also, if you would like to volunteer in your child’s classroom, please contact the teacher to learn more about how you can help.

This week, we respectfully ask that 1st-6th grade parents drop off and pick up their student(s) in the designated zones on our campus during school operations, 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. You may find the map of our campus Zones, here: CCE Zones Map 2023-24.pdf Lobos Listos recess begins tomorrow at 8:10 – 8:23 a.m. The two-minute warning bell rings at 8:23 a.m. letting students know they have two minutes to visit the restroom, fill up water bottles, put away playground equipment, etc., before lining up for the 8:25 a.m. bell.

We look forward to a wonderful school year with our students and families!

Sincerely yours,

Sra. Dunn

First Week of School CARES Review

Last week, our 1st-6th grade students reviewed our school’s CARES expectations during a first day of school assembly with tours in four important campus zones: Bathrooms, Cafeteria, Lunch/Snack Tables, and Play Structures. Tomorrow begins La semana de Coperación; Cooperation Week! Students will engage in lessons, activities, and stories that focus on this core value, Cooperation.

cafe en español

Café en español en Redwood Park

Spanish Immersion Parent and Teacher (SIPAT) Association hosted café en español at Redwood Park last Friday. Many families introduced each other and conversed in Spanish at last Friday drop off. SIPAT will continue to host fun events like this to support community and Spanish immersion engagement. To learn more about SIPAT, please visit their website.

Updates

smartwatch

CCE Policy for Cell Phones and Smart Watches

CCE families, the teachers, staff, and I need your help. Please review the following guidelines regarding cell phone and smart watch use during the school day at CCE with your 1st-6th grade student.

  • CCE students are not allowed to call or text their parents and/or guardian using either a personal cell phone, and/or smart watch during the school day between 8:25 a.m. – 2:30p.m. / 3:00p.m.
  • These electronics must be shut off by parent controls, or turned on “silent” and stored in backpacks at arrival or 8:25 a.m.
  • Students may only contact parents/guardians via the CCE office phone by request.
  • No District Chromebooks or personal electronics allowed in the hallways or on the black top throughout the school day. The exception is if a teacher is delivering a lesson outdoors and Chromebooks are needed for that lesson.

If a student is observed by a staff member using their personal cell phone or smart watch to call, text, record videos, or take pictures without CCE staff permission during the school day: 1) first warning issued and email sent home to parent, 2) personal cell phone/smart watch will be confiscated and held in the office for parent to pick up, 3) principal meeting with parent/guardian and student.

When Can Families Request Short-Term Independent Study (STIS)?

  • STIS does not start until September 5, 2022.
  • Please make sure to communicate with your child’s school attendance secretary and teacher(s) at least 5 teaching days in advance before completing the STIS form (in our office) so the teacher may have time to prepare the assignments.
  • STIS is approved for leaves between 3-10 days per occurrence and cannot exceed 10 consecutive days.
  • STIS is limited to a maximum of 14 school days in one year.

Reminders

School Campus Safety

We have established processes and practices to help keep our school communities safe. DJUSD staff will wear their identification badges at all times. All parents, guardians and visitors are required to check-in at the school’s front office to obtain a visitor badge prior to entering any other area of our campus.

Staff Parking Lot & 3-Minute Loading Zone

Please plan your transportation to CCE ahead of time to safely arrive at school by 8:10 a.m. Please consider that all DJUSD schools will begin around 8:30 a.m. in August, and in September traffic will increase on Anderson Road as university students and employees access the campus south bound.

  • Our parking lot is STAFF ONLY. Parents/Guardians may not drive through, bike through or park in this lot.
  • Do not park or leave your vehicle unattended at the 3-minute loading zone. It is a safety and flow of traffic issue. Drivers should not get out of their vehicle at the loading zone which is parallel with the Anderson Road bike lane.
  • Drop off at the loading zone is for student passengers to exit the vehicle at the sidewalk and walk to the center crosswalk where our Campus Safety Supervisor will direct students to safely cross at this crosswalk through the staff parking lot in front of the school.
  • Please park your vehicles on one of three designated neighborhood streets and walk onto campus (see below). CCE has a great relationship with our neighbors, so please be respectful when parking in residential areas by not blocking resident driveways or trash bins.
o Rutgers Rd – cross street east of Anderson Road
o Linden Ln – access off of W. 8th St.
o Maple Ln – access off of W. 8th St. Pine Ln.
