CCE Families,

Chronic Absenteeism at CCE

Significant Increase of Chronic Absenteeism at CCE
Between 2021-23, Chronic Absenteeism (defined as a student missing 10%; 18+ days, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year) at CCE has increased significantly. See figure below, or visit the data here.

If you happen to click the link above and spend time on the California Department of Education Dashboard Report, you will see all DJUSD schools represented. And if you dive deeper into the data, you will see a correlation with increase Chronic Absenteeism and decline in Academic performance (ELA and Math) at CCE. Please know that this data will be reviewed and discussed at our school committee meetings this month, and I encourage you to attend our School Site Council meeting (2/21/24) or our Climate Committee Meeting (2/27/24) to learn more.

Attendance Goal

CCE’s Attendance Goal

Our school is 2.5% below our yearly attendance goal and declining. As of Friday, February 2, we have 15 students with perfect attendance this academic year.

Attendance Matters

Attendance Matters in February

The month of February at CCE presents with higher volumes of student absences due to illness, as well as two 3-day holiday weekends and many families requesting Short-Term Independent Study (STIS). Therefore, we ask families to help out by contacting our front office staff and teachers each day your child will not be present at school due to illness or other reasons. In addition, our office staff and teachers respectfully ask that you provide us at least two weeks or more in advance when initiating the STIS Request form to provide the teachers ample time to create and organize materials for your child during their STIS. Also, the STIS contract work packet must be 100% completed and turned in by your student(s) in order to receive full school days/non-absence credit. You may pick up a STIS form in the front office and you may access more DJUSD Attendance Initiative information on our district website.

Celebrating History and Contributions

In February, CCE will be acknowledging National African American History Month. The CCE Library Team, Sra. Jonas and Sra. Haines, have been actively working to build and support the DJUSD Board of Education Resolution No. 39-23 and the district approved Ethnic Studies program recommendation at the elementary school level. They have been working with our teachers and librarians across the district to fill our library shelves and curriculum units with Children’s Literature written by Ethnic Studies authors. In addition, DJUSD School Board of Education voted unanimously December 17, 2021 to approve a resolution celebrating Juneteenth Independence Day as a local DJUSD holiday.

Avoid Trading or Sharing Foods with Peers at Snack or Lunch at School

DJUSD and CCE are committed to the safety of our students. In order to reduce the risk that children with food allergies will have an allergy-related event at school, the following guidelines have been assembled. DJUSD and CCE cannot guarantee that a student will never experience an allergy-related event while at school. Nonetheless, we are diligent in the prevention, care, and management of food allergies and reactions. Please read the following points below and/or you may access our DJUSD Guide for Supporting Children with Life-Threatening Food Allergies for more detailed information.

Avoid trading or sharing foods with peers.

Wash hands before and after eating.
Learn to recognize symptoms of an allergic reaction and notify an adult immediately if a reaction is suspected.

Promptly inform an adult as soon as accidental exposure occurs or symptoms appear.

Do not eat anything with unknown ingredients or ingredients known to contain an allergen (as age-appropriate).

Eat only foods brought from home and/or parent-approved cafeteria menu items.

Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Enrollment

Kindergarten registration is just around the corner, Monday, February 26, 2024! Younger siblings of CCE enrolled students, and any student eligible to attend DJUSD may register in our Kindergarten Spanish Language Immersion Program, regardless of language background. Students of varying abilities and needs contribute to the diversity of the community.

Parents should understand that becoming bilingual (exhibiting cognitive, academic, and linguistic benefits of immersion) takes approximately seven years in an intense learning environment. It is therefore desirable for students to participate through at least the sixth grade.
