Principal Dunn Update - September 10, 2023
Posted on 09/10/2023

Saludos comunidad CCE,

I hope this message finds you well and that your student(s) is/are Adaptando to their new school year! This week’s 1st-6th grade lessons have focused on Adaptability, the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions; it’s willingness to be open to anything new! This week our focus is on Responsabilidad, independently making good choices for yourself and others; we should do it because it is right and fair.

At CCE, we work with our students to have a common language and understanding of each of the 5-core values, CARES. Each month the 1st-6th grade staff and students recognize Super Lobos, students who demonstrate CARES, during a school assembly the last Friday of the month.
The staff and I would really appreciate you sharing the same language and understanding of CARES at home, too. In the month of September, I will be presenting our CARES program and school goals during the following scheduled meetings:

  • Tues., September 12, 7:00 p.m. – SIPAT General Meeting, Zoom
  • Wed., September 20, 3:30 p.m. – School Site Council, Room 22
  • Tues., September 26, 2:45 p.m. – Climate Committee, Room 35
  • Fri., October 6, 8:30 a.m. – Principal’s Coffee, MPR

I hope to see you at one of these meetings to share all the amazing efforts your student(s), teacher(s), and staff are demonstrating at CCE each day!

Warm regards,

Sra. Dunn

CCE Boats and Bridges: 4th and 5th grade STEM Activities

Sra. Dunbarr and Sra. Bugni, 4th-6th grade science teachers, introduced creative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities during classes this week. The highlight of these activities were how both teachers wove CCE's 5-core values CARES into these projects, and how the students soon realized that CARES skills were essential to sketch, construct, and prototype their boats and bridges with their teams. This is just one example of how our wonderful teachers weave academic content with Social-Emotional Learning/CARES together with our students.

Updates

Emergency Protocols and Situation Management

DJUSD and CCE are committed to raising awareness about safety on our school campuses. CCE and district staff train yearly on emergency protocols and situation management, and our students take part in various drills throughout each school year.

This week we will have our first drill. Our staff respectfully ask that you not inform your child about any of our emergency drills ahead of time at home as your explanation may not align with our district/staff language and protocols. Our experience is that it is more helpful for your child’s classroom teacher to explain the drill the morning of the drill, since we practice it as a whole school soon after the explanation, and then the teacher debriefs with the class afterwards. Here are ways to learn more about the emergency drills that are practiced monthly or twice a year at all DJUSD schools:

  • DJUSD Family Guide to Emergency Situations at School
  • Email your child’s teacher about the emergency drill talking points that will be discussed during the class’s morning meeting so you can discuss the same points at home.
