I hope your Thanksgiving break was a joyful and safe week with loved ones near or far. Thanks again to all the parents who attended their Parent-Teacher Conference, attended, and supported our Fall Scholastic Book Fair, and especially for arranging for your student’s 12:10 p.m. dismissal time for the first time this school year. We learned that this new time posed some challenges for families, though teachers and parents felt they had more options to schedule their conference times as well as increased time to talk with their teachers without the rush to get to the next meeting.

November Super Lobos
Last Friday, we held our November César CARES assembly to recognize our Super Lobos for demonstrating their CARES. Congratulations to the following students:

Sly Park
Congratulations to our 6th grade students for completing their week at Sly Park Environmental Education Center in Pollock Pines last week! Our 78 students received the highest compliments from the Sly Park staff, sharing with me how they collectively demonstrated CARES. Thank you to the 6th grade parents for supporting this trip, our 6th grade teachers, and our parent chaperones and drivers for volunteering their time. This trip would not be possible if it were not for your dedication and support!
Meet John!
CARES is a very important program at CCE that allows our staff to document student behaviors and social and emotional needs at school. According to our CARES data, students consistently struggle at school on Thursdays (data shows high frequency of unwelcome behaviors this day per week). As our response to support our students, we have a unique opportunity to work with a CCE parent who is part of the Canine Companions program and will be visiting CCE with John on the first and third Thursdays each month. We are excited to welcome John this Thursday!

Our new CARES Coordinator, Ysabel Magat, is AMAZING and has re-launched our school leadership program for 4th-6th grade students who are dedicated to modeling CARES and participating in community and school activities the support positive school climate and outcomes for all our students and staff at CCE!

Absences at CCE and Average Daily Attendance (ADA)
Since colds, flus and other respiratory illnesses are more common in colder months, CCE would like to share updated information about “When to Keep Your Child Home from School or Childcare”. There is an evident correlation with consistent school attendance and student academic and social-emotional progress. However, regular attendance is more so a factor in a Spanish Immersion Program when many of our students do not have access to Spanish literacy or Spanish resources outside of CCE. Total ADA is defined as the total days of student attendance divided by the total days of instruction, which CCE receives credit/funds based upon attendance of our students.
Alas, CCE absences have increased by 20% this trimester in comparison to other school years. These absences are due to:
- Keeping students home with low-level symptoms, understandably caregivers doing their part to limit the spread of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), flu, and COVID-19.
- Traveling beyond the 10-consecutive day limit on Short-Term Independent Study contracts, or exceeding the 14-day STIS threshold.
- General Chronic absenteeism, etc.
Traveling for the Holidays? Don’t Fall Behind!
We know that this time of year brings extra travel for many families, and this means that students may have to miss school. Short-term independent study (STIS) is available for students who know in advance that they will be absent for three or more school days and enables the student to stay current with coursework provided by their teacher(s). Students can use STIS for up to 10 consecutive days at a time, with a limit of 14 days total per school year. - STIS Plans take teachers much time to put together, please give your teacher advance notice at least 5 business days
- Schools receive STIS attendance credit contingent on the percentage of student work packet completion; (i.e. 10-day STIS only 50% of the student work packet completed equates to 5 days of school attendance credit not 10 days.)
- Teachers also receive STIS compensation for creating STIS student work packets contingent on the percentage of student work packet completion; (i.e. 10-day STIS only 50% of the student work packet completed equates to 5 days of teacher STIS compensation not 10 days.)

Lost and Found
Parents, please check the lost and found over the next couple of weeks, especially during Parent-Teacher Conference Week. CCE will be donating clothing items and discarding water bottles and lunchboxes during the Fall/Winter breaks.
